Celebrate Earth Day, today and every day

Happy Earth Day!

Our planet is such a magnificent place.  It is rich in natural resources and abundant in life.  Wouldn’t it be amazing to travel around the world and see the Seven Natural Wonders of the World?

As our planet becomes more populated, we have an increased impact the world’s natural environment.  We are currently facing some major environmental challenges such as air pollution, biodiversity destruction, deforestation, waste management, chemical and plastic disposal, and water depletion and degradation.

So, how can we make a difference? What can we change in our daily lives that will slow and reduce human impact on the planet?

These are some of the things that I am working on:

1)      Reducing my consumption of new and low-quality products by purchasing second-hand items and high quality new items. My goal is that when I purchase new items, I plan to take care of them and make them last for a long time.

2)      Reducing my wasted energy use by turning off my computer when I leave work, lights when I leave the room, and unplugging electronics when I am not using them.

3)      Consciously separating my garbage, recycling, and food scraps into their proper waste management system. I want to prevent as much waste as possible from ending up in the landfill.

4)      Removing chemical products from my home.  I am green cleaning {using vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice} and using natural shampoo, makeup, and laundry products. I also have all of the ingredients to make my own lotion this weekend using shea butter, coconut oil, and jojoba oil using this recipe.

5)      Biking to work {I haven’t actually done this yet but I am going to this summer}!

6)      Eating seasonally and locally.  Since I can’t grow all of my own fruits and vegetables, I try to purchase products which are grown in Washington State and the northwest so my food doesn’t travel long distances using unnecessary fuel.

I’d love some other ideas – what do you do to minimize your impact on the planet?

  1. I like to buy food that doesn’t come in a package. We buy loose produce and just roll it down to the checker without the plastic produce bags. Usually by garbage day every week, there is little to no trash in our tiny garbage can. We have plenty of compost and some recycling, but almost no garbage.
